Muscle car and hot rod enthusiasts want to pack as much horsepower and torque as possible for their modified street performance vehicle. What is the best way to achieve this short of replacing the engine altogether? We’ll outline the top 5 modifications for increasing horsepower.
1. Cold Air Intake
This is the easiest and most cost-effective way to add horsepower. Cold air intakes have a larger area for pulling air through. This minimizes resistance that may hamper airflow into your engine.
2. Larger Throttle Body
The throttle body works in sync with the fuel injection system to regulate airflow. A throttle body with a larger diameter improves airflow to the engine. This mod alone can increase engine power by up to 25 horsepower.
3. Exhaust Header
Aftermarket exhaust headers come in long tube and short header varieties. The former is ideal for increasing horsepower and torque at higher RPMs, while short headers deliver more horsepower in the lower RPM range.
4. High-Flow Catalytic Converter
A high-flow catalytic converter reduces emissions at a higher rate than a stock model. The high-flow variant contains a bigger cross section within the inner honeycomb design. This increases the passage length the gas must pass through, allowing it to remove more harmful smog chemicals, such as nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide.
5. High-Flow Cat-Back Exhaust System
This replaces the much less efficient stock exhaust pipe and stock muffler. The high-flow cat-back exhaust system and high-flow catalytic converter go together to improve airflow. We recommend an aftermarket model with mandrel-bent pipes.
High performance and off-road vehicles alike can benefit from a few extra horses and torque. NW Performance and Off Road outfits automobiles for both performance and cosmetic appeal. Our auto service and maintenance crew can implement any of the above modifications for increasing horsepower.
